Powercast showcases its RF wireless power technology at the 2018 Sensors Expo and Conference. The expo is being held on June 26-28 at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. The Sensors Expo and Conference is the largest event dedicated to the sensors technology industry, allowing people from around the world to network and focus exclusively on sensors and sensor-integrated systems.
Powercast is a company dedicated to developing wireless power solutions through harvesting radio frequency (RF) wireless energy. This year, they showcase their transmitters and receiver chips. The technology can be used for a number of applications, “Whether it’s power sensors or to recharge batteries,” says Eric Biel, Principle Engineer.
Powercast demonstrates the capabilities of their transmitters with the use of their PS915 power sticks. The transmitters send out RF energy into the air, which is harvested by the receiver chips located on the power sticks. “What our receiver chips do, is along with an antenna, we’re able to grab that RF energy and then convert it to DC,” Biel explains.
The DC power is what powers various appliances, which in this case lights up the PS915 power sticks. The closer the PS915 power sticks are to the transmitter, the greater the energy and brighter the light. The farther away from the transmitter, the lesser the energy and dimmer the light.
“We’ve been doing this for almost 15 years now. A large portion of that has been spent in the industrial space, where we’re powering sensors on machinery and things like that,” says Biel.
However, there has been a growing interest in using wireless charging for consumer products. This wireless power technology created by Powercast can potentially be used to charge people’s phones and other electronics without having to plug them in.
The concept is to allow people to place their electronic devices near a transmitter and the devices will start charging without cords or charging mats.
Powercast was founded in 2003 and is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company develops various chips and modules, antennas, transmitters, rechargeable sensor tags, and more for Original Equipment Manufacturers to embed into their own systems and products.
Powercast’s mission is to provide solutions that enable over-the-air charging for electronic devices combine through its FCC-approved transmitters and receiver chips.
